Miyu Yamashita wins The AIG Women's Open
Having achieved a top-10 finish at the past two Women’s PGA championships, Japan’s Miyu Yamashita was finally the victor lifting the major trophy this Sunday have beaten the field by a clear 2 strokes at the AIG Women’s Open.
She started strong and remained poised as she accomplished a faultless second round that consisted of 7 birdies, propelling her into the lead. Yamashita had strong resistance the entire tournament, and despite a lacklustre 2-over third round, she took to the 18th hole for the fourth time knowing a bogey would be enough to secure the win, and she closed with a tidy par.
Yamashita expressed her elation at having won, as well as her gratitude towards the venue via a translator “To win such a historic tournament in front of all these amazing fans is such an incredible feeling. To be part of such a moment in history is something very special.”
Charley Hull's late charge
Charley Hull had an excellent late charge at the Women’s Open only to have fallen at the last hurdle and miss out on claiming her first major trophy. The 29-year-old was only level par come the tournaments mid-way point, but carded a 6-under-par 66 on the Saturday to shoot up the leaderboard.
Hull was chasing Yamashita and was right on her tail having made 5 birdies in her final round, but a pair of bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes kept her from threatening the lead, and she finished T2 alongside Minami Katsu.
Still shy of being a major champion, Hull had previously finished second at the Chevron Championship in 2016, the U.S. Women’s Open in 2023, and the AIG Women’s Open in 2023 prior to this weekend.
The Solheim Cup Team Europe member’s resolve is admirable however, and despite having missed out on another major trophy opportunity, she has faith in her abilities and remains hungry for future success “I don’t feel like I’ve actually mucked it up by mishitting any shots, which I think everybody can probably agree, you know what I mean? I played so solid.”
